This summer Omni Glass & Paint tackled its first ever lighthouse painting project in Door County. The Cana Island lighthouse is located just north of Baileys Harbor.
There were several logistical issues as the lighthouse is built on an island that has been connected to the mainland by a narrow dirt path. The lighthouse also remained open to the public throughout the renovation project. Along with that, there were very stringent preparation means and methods specified to retain the historic elements of the lighthouse. A 125-foot boom lift was used to access most of the tower. The project took 4 months to complete. Project Manager Jon Stradel said that sitting out on an island in Lake Michigan made it a unique setting for the project.
Omni painted the entire lighthouse and the trim on the keeper’s house.
The 8.7-acre island includes the 89-foot tall light tower, the original home of the lighthouse keeper and his family, and the oil house where the fuel for the light was stored. The highlight of any Cana Island visit is climbing the 97 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase to reach the gallery deck.
One of Door County’s most popular lighthouses, the Cana Island Lighthouse, has been standing watch on the shore of Lake Michigan for more than 140 years.
